One of the biggest myths about merino wool is that it's difficult to care for.
In fact, the opposite is true.
Once people discover how easy merino is to wash, wear, and maintain, it's often one of the reasons they never go back to synthetic fabrics.
At Mad About Merino, we wear merino every day, and caring for it is wonderfully simple.
The Secret: Don't Over-Wash š¦
This may be the most important merino care tip of all:
You don't need to wash merino nearly as often as other fabrics.
Merino wool is naturally odor resistant and antimicrobial, which means it stays fresh remarkably well between washes.
Many customers are surprised to discover they can wear their favorite merino pieces multiple times before laundering them.
Often, simply airing your garment out overnight is all it needs.
Less washing means:
Less work
Less wear on the garment
Longer garment life
It's a win for both you and your wardrobe.
Machine Wash with Confidence
Most people are delighted to learn that our merino garments are machine washable.
When it's time to clean your garment:
Turn it inside out if desired
Wash on a delicate or wool cycle
Use cold water
Wash with similar colors
That's it.
No complicated rituals required.

Choose the Right Detergent
Merino wool is a natural protein fiber, which means traditional laundry detergents can be too harsh.
Many conventional detergents contain enzymes designed to break down proteins and stains. Unfortunately, those same enzymes can also damage wool fibers over time.
Instead, choose:
A dedicated wool wash
Personally, my favorite is Dr. Bronner's Lavender Castile Soap. It leaves garments feeling wonderfully clean and smelling fresh without an overpowering fragrance.
A little goes a long way.
Drying is Easy
Skip the dryer.
Instead:
Hang to dry on a hanger
Keep garments out of direct sunlight
Allow a few hours for drying
One of the wonderful things about lightweight merino is how quickly it dries.
We often wash our merino in the evening and find it ready to wear again the next morning.

A Simple Storage Tip
Like all natural fibers, merino benefits from a little extra care during long-term storage.
A trick we've used for years is to occasionally place clean merino garments into a zip-top bag and leave them in the freezer for a day or two.
This simple practice helps keep garments fresh and provides an extra layer of protection during storage, particularly if you live in a climate where wool-loving insects are common.
Think of it as a little spa treatment for your merino.
Perfect for Travel āļø
One of the reasons we love merino so much for travel is that caring for it on the road is incredibly simple.
Because merino:
Resists odor
Requires less frequent washing
Dries quickly
Packs beautifully
Holds its shape exceptionally well
You can often travel with fewer garments while staying comfortable and looking polished.
A quick sink wash, a few hours of drying, and you're ready for another day of adventure.
Merino Holds Its Shape Beautifully
Another reason we love merino?
Unlike many cotton garments, merino wool naturally springs back into shape after wearing.
Cotton often stretches and relaxes throughout the day, particularly at the knees, elbows, waistline, and seat. Merino fibers are naturally resilient, helping garments maintain their silhouette wear after wear.
That means:
Less sagging
Less stretching
Less bagginess
A more polished appearance
It's one of the reasons merino garments continue to look beautiful for years and why so many customers tell us their favorite merino pieces become wardrobe staples.
Simple Care, Lasting Beauty
At the end of the day, merino isn't a high-maintenance fabric at all.
Quite the opposite.
Wear it often.
Wash it gently.
Dry it naturally.
And enjoy years of comfort, versatility, and effortless style.
Because merino resists odor, requires less washing, dries quickly, and holds its shape beautifully, it often proves easier to care for than cashmere, cotton or synthetic fabrics.
Sometimes the most luxurious things are also the simplest.
